We often get asked the question, “have you all settled into Res yet?”, and we must admit that sometimes it catches us by surprise when we realise that we are still relatively new to this community!  We actually feel far more than settled — we feel completely at home and ‘part of the furniture’, so to speak. Since the last Mary St Post (Edition 2), we had a wonderful end to Semester 2 last year, full of so many fun and engaging events and memorable times. Footy Day, Formal, End of Year break up, and the closing service were a few of the highlights. It was really sad to farewell to last year’s second year students, but we have loved seeing some of them around KBC and having them visit Res from time to time.

From passionate coriander objectors, to great artists, Kew Student Residence (KSR) celebrates all people. And this time round, we are talking art with Molly Hodgson. Undoubtedly, Molly Hodgson is one of our greats. Although Molly hates coriander, she is a very good artist. Molly is Victorian College of the Arts worthy (they only accept 120 students per year) and look, that’s pretty darn good! So, to make us sound like we know how to newsletter at KSR, we decided to ask her about her everyday ponderings and how she creates such good-looking art!

On the 23^rd of September, we had our annual Kew Footy Day at Victoria Park in Collingwood. What a great weekend it was! With near perfect weather and a very good turnout, the day was a real success. It was awesome to see lots of people who have not been around the Kew community for some time, getting involved and being able to meet others who are now part of the Church or the Res. Male and female teams Res, Ex Res and Church all competed for the label of Footy Day Champions.

Claire & Michael Wilson (1982-1984)

It was 1982 and on Sunday 21^st February the 40 residents of Kew Baptist Youth Hostel (as it was known then) moved in from all over country Victoria, ACT and NSW.

Richmond were still then a VFL/AFL powerhouse and were premiers in 1980 and runners up in 1982, but they went quiet until this year. Malcolm Fraser was Prime Minister. Australia still had not won the America’s Cup (nor had anyone else except the New York Yacht Club). It was the previous millennium and a very long time ago. Astonishingly, there was no internet or mobile phones. It was truly the Dark ages!

 

Emily Conley one of our second year students last year was given the opportunity to travel to Nanjing, China with her Inline Hockey team, to compete in the World Roller Games representing Australia.

At KSR we think this is a pretty amazing achievement, so we decided to ask her about it!

Following on from his role as National Universities Coordinator at Red Frogs, Mark Gellie and his wife Amy are preparing for the new challenge of leading the Res. They will bring with them their three children, Briah, Sam and Lewis. Find out more about them

The Two of Us – Andy Hunter and Glynn Chambers (2005 – ’06)

Andy Hunter and Glynn Chambers, in many ways, couldn’t be more different.

But their relationship, forged through living together at the Hostel, continues to be strong despite living on different continents in opposite hemispheres.

KSR Accommodation Scholarship Fund

We know that students from rural Australia are at a disadvantage – for a wide range of reasons – in regards to access to, and success in, higher education. Studies have shown the support by way of scholarships for financially disadvantaged students can not only increase the opportunity for further education and improve educational outcomes, but that these scholarships also contribute to their recipients’ improved self-efficacy and contribution to society.

Ruach: Writings from the Breath of Creativity and Spirituality (Zoe Boyle ’15 and Marny Croot ’11-’12)

Zoe and Marny were part of the very first cohort of NEXT students at Whitley College in 2015. Now in just its third year, NEXT has had nine former KSR students undertake the course. As part of the course, Zoe and Marny contributed to a book of creative works called Ruach: Writings from the Breath of Creativity and Spirituality. We offer a piece from each of them here…
